When
it comes to real estate listings, the phrase “a picture is worth a
thousand words” holds true. From a handful of photos, buyers can gather a
sense of a property’s design and overall aesthetic, and with those
first impressions begin to envision what life would look like there. Of
course, what pictures can’t convey are those invisible, ineffable
qualities that are hard to pin down. Atmosphere. Scent. Sound. Comfort.
For actor Billy Baldwin—best known for his roles in such films as Backdraft and The Squid and the Whale—and
his wife, musician Chynna Phillips of the pop group Wilson Phillips, it
was these qualities that best expressed the persona of their Mission Canyon home in Santa Barbara.
As
I chatted on the phone with the famous pair about their time at 748
Mission Canyon Road, the conversation drifted from specifics like room
count and countertop materials to something that more closely resembled a
reverie. “Some of my best memories are lying on the front lawn with
Chynna,” said Baldwin. “She would say listen to the birds in the trees,
the breeze, the sound of the church bells from the Mission or the train
in the distance. It all felt very serene and romantic.”
Such
feelings of tranquility were echoed by Phillips. “From the moment we
first toured the house, I knew it was special. We were strangers to this
home, and yet it immediately felt like our sanctuary.”
Now, after a three-year tenure, the couple have put the five-bedroom compound on the market for $3.89 million.
Hidden
at the end of a quiet narrow lane, the property sits just north of
Rocky Nook Park and Old Mission Santa Barbara. Downtown Santa Barbara is
minutes away, but the half-acre retreat still seems set a world apart
thanks to the enclosure of mature trees that wraps around the property.
Privacy
is typical of the Mission Canyon neighborhood, with its eclectic
collection of historic homes surrounded by lush natural vegetation.
Built
in 1949, the bungalow-style home sits on a raised perch. Winding paths
cut through subtle landscaping and large stretches of lawn. Two pergolas
on opposite ends of the yard as well as a covered terrace just off the
main living room provide charming settings to enjoy the fresh air.
Having
implemented many renovations during their occupancy, Baldwin and
Phillips have left their personal stamp on the compound, though not at
the expense of its original character. “We wanted to modernize,” says
Phillips, “but we still wanted to keep that old world feel.”
Upgrades
touch almost every corner of the main home, including the installation
of modern fixtures and wide-plank oak flooring throughout. The kitchen
was given extra attention, receiving an extensive remodel that saw the
addition of a central island topped with quartz, open cabinetry next to
the farmhouse sink and a skylight.
A
two-bed guest house with full bath and kitchen sits within the grounds.
“We have kids in college, and we loved that when they came to visit,
they had a place where they had privacy.”
Other
highlights include a formal dining room lined by built-in shelving and
wine storage, a walk-in pantry/laundry area and a primary suite complete
with a window seat, balcony and a recently added freestanding soaking
tub.
While
the duo are excited to move closer to their children in Los Angeles,
they are also nostalgic for the years they’ve enjoyed in their beloved
home. As our call drew to its close, Baldwin reminiscing over his
favorite memories of the Santa Barbara property, Phillips interjected,
“Oh no! Are we sure we want to move?”
