After years in the public eye, there are three things that can safely be said about Bethenny Frankel.
The first is that she’s brutally honest. The second is that she’s
fearless and the third is that she’s always surprising people. All of
this is especially true when it comes to designing her apartment in
Manhattan.
The star of Lifetime's Danger In The Dorm
recently purchased an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
While she lives full-time outside of the city and has a home in
Bridgehampton, New York, she still needed a pied-Ã -terrefor when she
does press and attends events in the city. So, after years downtown, she
decided to change things up. Frankel fell in love with the charm of the
Upper West Side, with all of its shops and restaurants, in addition to
its proximity to television studios.
Here’s a look at the space along with some insight into her decorating process.
From Skinnygirl To Home Girl
Frankel
purchased a 1300 square foot two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in a
pre-war building. The space was recently gut-renovated in a way that
properly paid homage to the original architectural style with features
including moldings and herringbone floors. All Frankel needed to do was
make it her own.
While she worked with The Setting
on this project, she did most of the heavy design lifting herself. “My
designer will tell me if something is too big or too small or where to
put electrical outlets. What she did was more like staging because I'm
very decisive. But I might not know that a certain couch won’t fit. I'm
not good at scale and dimension.”
After
living in several homes over the years, perhaps most famously a large
loft in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood, the author of Business Is Personal has enough experience to know what she wants most—speed of delivery.
For example, one of the most interesting ways she decorated this home was by using Instacart. Yes, Instacart.
This includes the wallpaper she used to decorate the ceilings in both
her and her daughter Bryn Hoppy’s bedroom, which was delivered from
Lowes.
Then
she ordered a variety of pieces from her favorite stores including
Target, Home Depot, Wayfair, Wisteria, Pottery Barn, RH, Williams
Sonoma, West Elm, Rove Concepts, Article, CB2, and Safaveigh. Her big
requirement? Everything was in stock.
Frankel
didn’t want to change things up too much because everything had been
done for her. Still, she added elements to make the space more
functional. This included a table that looked like a custom-built island
in the kitchen. “Everybody fought me on the island,” explains the
entrepreneur, “They thought it was going to look too cluttered. So
instead of putting it in the corner of the kitchen, I attached it to the
wall.”
Another
feature that Frankel is very enthusiastic about is the banquette in the
dining space, which she chose for its comfortable, casual vibe. While
it has a custom aesthetic, it was not a custom piece. It just turned out
to fit perfectly. “I am a hunter,” she tells me.
It is the ideal place to sit and eat a meal. Or perhaps treat herself to a glass of her Forever Young Wine or a Mingle Mocktail, a brand in which she is an investor.
High Low
When
it comes to interior design, Frankel feels it's important to spend
wisely. Although she could have spent a lot more on decorating this
home, she chose not to. “For, the installation of the wallpaper is more
important than the wallpaper itself,” she explains. “When it comes to
rugs, the dog could pee on a rug and you can replace it that same day,
and it would get there on the same day.”
Bethenny’s Bedroom
There
are two very noticeable features of the main bedroom. The first is the
Crate and Barrel Bed, which covers the entire wall. As with most of the
items in the home, this headboard wasn’t custom, it just happened to fit
perfectly, while the built-in floating nightstands add a sleek and
convenient touch.
Another
piece of furniture she loved was the Bellini-style sofa. “It was really
important to me. I'm the person who gravitates the bed so I wanted a
couch in the bedroom.”
One of the biggest design challenges for Frankel was the closet, which was converted to a cloffice or
closet/office combo. “I built out that closet within an inch of its
life. I built a custom vanity with lighting and other finishes because
I'm going to be in there a lot I want to feel good about it.” The
stylish space has everything from new light fixtures to wallpaper and
even a bright blue rug to add a pop of color.
Bryn’s Room
Frankel designed her daughter’s room as a flexible space where she could record her incredibly popular podcast
as well as use it as a guest room if need be. Still, she wanted the
room to be comfortable for her daughter. “I wanted to surprise her with
some pink and whimsy.”
The
room features a pink velvet daybed from Wayfair and a curved boucle
sofa from CB2. Trendy side tables with grey lamps provide a chic neutral
accent. But, with fun accessories including Yellowpop Keith Haring
style neons and a giant Miffy, the space still feels like a teenage
girl’s bedroom.
While the room prominently features a vanity, Frankel tells me Bryn isn’t exactly a Sephora Kid.
She tells me, “She will go to Sephora every once in a while. But most
of her friends don’t have $10000 worth of makeup at even given time
laying around the house because of what I do. I donate and give away
what we’re not using. We aren’t an overconsumption beauty family over
here.”
Decorating 101
For
those inspired by her style, Frankel recommends finding a palette and
sticking to it. If you are purchasing real estate as an investment, she
suggests going with neutral colors. Then accessorize with more
affordable, less permanent items that reflect your personality.
She
also advises leaning into the features and fixtures the home already
has. Then, instead of spending a lot of cash on replacing these things,
try to see how you can change them on a dime. For example, repainting
built-ins or tile instead of removing these elements altogether.
