ESU ODARA (DIVINITY
OF THE CROSS ROAD)- ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW BY BABALAWO OBANIFA -Obanifa extreme documentaries(vol 1)
WHO SI ESU?
In Africa Ifa cosmology
Esu Odara is one of the primeval deities that descended from heaven to earth
during the first migration of the Irumonle (the divinities) to earth. Esu in Africa Ifa cosmology is the divinities of
the cross road, popularly known as Esu Onile Orita in Yoruba language . Esu is
called different names in different tradition. But his real name is Esu/Esu
Odara. In some places Esu is known as ELLEGUA OR LEGBA. In Africa Ifa spirituality,
it is believed that Esu have two-hundred names, and all these names are derived
from his activities or his deeds or some times from the songs use to praise and
eulogies this divinity. Examples of such names are : Esu -Lalu (Esu the wealth
and honor of the city), Ogiri Oko (the person who is hard as rock),Akeregbaye
(The person who is small but in control of universe),Elegbara( the mighty and
powerful one),Lagemon Orun(the scared child of heaven), Esu Odara (one who can
do and undo),Alakalu(one whose greatness manifest all over the world),Onibode(The
gate keeper), Papa-wara (The supersonic).Esu is the right hand divinity of Orunmila.
He is the divinity that usually see to the completion of Orunmila desires. He
take Ebo(sacrifice) as his dividends for carrying out Orunmila desires. Esu is
the bearer of ebo to Ikole Orun (Heaven- The realm of the ancestors). He is the
enforcer of the will of Olodumare (God) to other divinities and human beings.
Hence Esu is been refer to as arbiter between human being who is advise to
offer ebo(sacrifice) to forestall Ajogun(the malevolence forces- Ajogun is a
spiritual term in African Ifa spirituality use to refer to combination of malevolence
forces or evil force that cause negative and setback effects on human’s life).
Esu is in Africa Ifa spirituality is deem to be the intermediary between this
Ajogun and human beings. Esu as the enforcer of the will of Olodumare . Esu Usually
bring good or bad things to human being
depending on the frequency they maintained with the will of Olodumare. So Esu
is the intermediary between the two opposing end ends of human aspiration and
displeasure. Life or death, wealth or poverty fulfilment and failure, Joy and
sadness bountiful harvest or drought. Esu is a divinity that can be used as a
spiritual catalyst that can be used to sustain and or improve any situation. This may account
for the reason while some people who have shallow knowledge of this divinity mistakenly
refer to it as Lucifer or Satan. I have seen many cases where clients will aske
me ,Babalawo Obanifa you told to venerate Esu .Hope it is not Satan I am
venerating ? it will take me extra effort to explain to them that there is different
between Esu and Satan , and that they are not the same thing and can never be the
same . Esu as a divinity is neutral deity between the evil and good. When Ifa either through Idafa (Ifa consultation
and divination) give warning against the
imminent onslaught of the Ajogun(malevolence forces). If Ebo is prescribe ,Esu will be the one who will undertake the
duty to forestall or reduce the effect
or impact of the negative activities of the
Ajogun.
When ebo (sacrifice) is prescribe
and warning is sounded to human being . If he/she heed comply and heed
warning and offer ebo as prescribe. It
is Esu that will be a messenger who will bear the ebo. He will equipped himself with the material that the Babalawo
have prescribe and have been use to
offer the ebo . It is these materials that Esu will use to placate the Ajogun
(malevolence forces. That is what the Ajogun will take in exchange for the
impending calamity such as death, sickness, loss, litigation, imprisonment etc.
that they are about to unleash on the individual.
Also, the way Esu
can be good, he can also be bad. When person disobey the instruction giving.
Esu can also serve as accuser and tormentor of such person. But he immediately
retreats once such person make redress.
WHAT IS IT THAT MAKE
ESU ODARA THE PREFER CHOICE AND RIGHT-HAND DIVINITY OF ORUNMILA
It is important to
discuss here what make Esu the most prefer deity by Orunmila. There are various
side to this position. Some position say that Esu Odara is an Omo Awo (apprentice
of Orunmila ). While some say Esu is a die - hard loyalist and friend of
Orunmila. Hence Orunmila choose him as the most prefer deity. I will explain in
detail below:
Esu Odara As
Omo ( Ifa apprentice ) of Orunmila
At the dawn of the
creation, Esu is one of the Irunmonle (divinities
) that descend from heaven to earth. At this time Esu is an Omo Ikofa/Omo
Awo Orunmila (Ifa apprentice to Orunmila
). In fact, Esu Odara is deem as fisrt omo Awo Orunmila (Esu is the first Ifa
apprentice). Esu is as first Omo Awo
Orunmila (first Ifa apprentice to Orunmila). Esu always stand erected on the
northern part of Opon Ifa(Ifa tray). He will be observing everything that his
master Orunmila is doing. He is the record keeper that keep the account of the
people or clients that come for Ifa consolation, name of the Odu Ifa that appear
for them, the Ebo or Ibo prescribe for the client. He will also be the one to
observe ether the client come back to offer the prescribe ebo or he/she did not comply. These function of activities of
Esu Odara at the dawn of the creation is what make Orunmila honor him with his
figure always carved at the front center of the Opon Ifa . You will observe
that in every Opon Ifa you will see the face or head figure of Esu carved on it
facing the Babalawo whenever he is making his Ifa consultation or Ebo.
Esu did not only
perform function as Omo Aw Orunmila . Esu Also serve as witness to Orunmila whenever
Orunmila is reporting his activities to Olodumare. He will be the to substantiate
Orunmila activities in front Of Olodumare. The material and money that perspective
client supply to Orunmila to offer Ebo. The one use by Orunmila out of it for
ebo. Thet part of the materials that Orunmila keep for himself for his own use
and maintenance. The people that offer Ebo. The people that refuse to offer
ebo. He will be the one buttressing the activities and repost of Orunmila to
Olodumare. Since Esu is usually at the northern part of the Opon Ifa (bearing)
witness to every activities of Orunmila on divination and offering of Ebo.
Esu Odara As
Friend Of Orunmila
There is
Other Odu Ifa inside Ogbe Irete .Where
Ifa point out that one of the reason while Orunmila prefer Esu the most among
all deities is because Esu prove himself
to a loyal friend of Orunmila. According to Odu Ifa Ogbe Irete. Orunmila was a very kind person and he everybody
that come across his path to achieve their goals and objective in life.
Everywhere Orunmila went, people were praising him. He had many praise
names and pseudonyms. He also had many friends and admirers. During
all the time that people spent with Orunmila, they were telling him how much
they loved him and that there was nothing they can do without him. Some of them even said that
they preferred that evil come to them before something bad happened to Orunmila.
Orunmila became very concerned when he heard that from the people around him
and was even more distressed when he recognized that none of them had said
anything against him. Orunmila was convinced to believe that all of them
could not really feel what they were saying. So, he decided to check who
really loved him and who pretended to. Accordingly, he decided to give
equal opportunities to demonstrate their love for him to all his friends and
admirers. After meditating on a plan, Orunmila made an Ifa consultation.
During the consultation, Orunmila was sure that he would be able to identify
those who truly loved him and those who pretended to do so. Orunmila was
told to pretend to be dead. They also advised him to offer sacrifice with
three roosters, three pigeons, and money. After this, he was advised to
go and cut an Arira tree of the same height and to sacrifice and kill an adult
goat and use the blood of the goat to
rub the cut tree. After that he will put the tree on his bed, he will cover it with sheets and pretend as if he was dead ,and hide to see the people who came to his house.
Orunmila did it all. The day of Orunmila’s
death was announced and everyone was lamenting and crying. A few moments
later, some of his supposedly better friends returned to demand that Orunmila
owed them certain amount of money and that they had the right to recover that
money immediately. Among them were, Sango and Ogun . The people who
were lamenting paid what those people told them that Orunmila owed them. Some
came to confirm that Orunmila was truly dead; but when they left Orunmila's
house, they began to make jokes about him and say he thought he was the only
one who could enjoy life. He thought he was the only one who is wise. See how
he just died . Many spoke ill of him and stopped going to his house. When
some of his intimate friends were told
that Orunmila was dead, they chased away those who brought the news, stating
that they already had their own problems, which Orunmila had caused them before dying. Some of
them also expressed relief that the person disturbing them has finally
gone. There was a group of people who could not even be considered
friends of Orunmila , however they had been standing crying for him since they
received the news of his death. Esu was one of those in that group. And they
came to his house, they offered to dig his grave, to draw water and to prepare
food for those who came to see Orunmila’s corpse. They were there in favor of Orunmila
for six days and were willing to stay
with Orúnmila for forty more days. However on the seventh day, Orunmila
returned home very early in the morning, and removed the Arira tree from above
the bed. When his true admirers came in the morning, they began to tell
everyone that Orunmila was alive.
All his supposed friends rushed to verify what they said and were embarrassed to see him alive. Those who had
collected money, those who abused and those who showed indifference began to
cry and beg for forgiveness. When Orunmila saw this, he told them who the
true friends were and who the hypocrites were. He remembered what his Awo
had told him. That :
Ka diju, ka se bi

Another similar
Odu Ifa that talk about Esu Odara been a loyal friend of Orunmila is Odu Ifa Iwori Ika where Ifa refer to Orunmila as a very patient person among all the other divinities .
He is close to all of them and is like a
friend to them, always doing things together with them; but one day Orunmila
fell asleep and had very serious dreams
as a sign of very bad things. When he woke up, he have Ifa consultation.
Iwori Ika was the Odu Ifa that appear on the divination tray. He was advised
to cut a banana stem and to wrap it with
white cloth as if it were a corpse wrapped and thrown on the floor. They
told him to take him to the upper room so that he would know who his enemies
are and are his friends within the Irunmole.
When all the divinities arrived to see the purported corpse, Orunmila listened to their
words and was able to decipher who his
friends were and who are his
enemies. When Esu's turn came, he began to cry for what they had done to
Orunmila and then Orunmila took him seriously because he saw sincerity in him . On this Iwori Ika says:
Orunmila ge iti Ogede
O we laso funfun
bi Oku
Molebi kede Iku
Orunmila
Orunmila gori aja
ile lati gbo ohun ti onikaluku fe so
Ko si le mon eni to

Igba gbogbo

Orunmila
Esu Odara nikan lo

Translation:
Orunmila cut a banana tree as a figure
He covered it with
a white sheet as if it were his own Corpse
And his family announced his death
And he hid in the
ceiling to see what the deities said about him
In order to know
who loved him most
When e all the divinities arrived, he confirmed who
his enemies were
But it was only Esu
Odara who kept very close to him
Because only Esu
Odara felt bad about what had happened.
The events from this
aforementioned are what make Orunmila choose Edu Odara as his most prefer
divinity. Hence when ever you Orunmila .Esu
which is the most closest to him will not be far from there.
Also in Odu Ifa
Osa Ogbe also known as Osa Esu. Ifa say
that It is Esu Odara that safe Orunmila
and the people of the world from the
Ajogun. When the Ajogun(malevolence forces) were coming from heaven to earth
were coming from heaven to earth . It is Esu Odara that first have pre-Knowledge
of their coming . He is the one he
informed Orunmila Of the Coming of the Ajogun(malevolence forces and the
misfortune they can cause.Orunmila quickly supply and Equip Esu with the items
to go and negotiate with the Ajogun.Esu reach an agreement with the Ajogun to
serve as their intermediary between human being and Ajogun. He will take
sacfrifice of their behalf to make sure they turn their benevolence side to human
being.
WHAT IS THE SYMBOL
OF ESU
Esu Image Or symbol
can be carved with wood, a pieces of rock, clay will also do,But the most
effective statute of Esu is usually made from Yangi (laterite ) taking from the
stream or river. You will see detail about this when I am explaining on how to
consecrate different Esu. Odu Osa Ogbe make it clear that it is Yangi
(laterite) that serve as haven for Esu during the time of trouble. And Esu make covenat
with it that whose so ever call him there he will answer them. On this Odu Ifa
Osa Ogbe say:

ESU IS NOT A SATAN/LUCIFER
“If
it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it.” -
Marcus Aurelius
'Esu whose mother's name is Adin, whose historical
home town is traceable to Ketu and Ijelu Ekiti in Yoruba land, whose
contemporaries are Orunmila,Ogun,Obatala, and Other Irunmole is not in
any way the same thing with the Satan or Lucifer of Jew s tradition or Shayṭān
of Arab Islamic tradition ,Bishop Ajayi Crowther committed a generational
error, history can never forgive his mistake, but history will correct it. '
- Babalawo Obanifa.
This aspect I title it ,Esu
is not a Satan. The missionaries who brough Christianity and Islam to Africa
have done much damage to the culture and value of Africa continents. These two religion
mentioned and their adherents mistakenly interpret Esu as a Satan in their
translation. The two are not the same, Bishop Ajayi Crowther is the major protagonist
of this blunder. As you shall see in my explanation below you will know that the
two are not the same.
Christianity Description And Historical Account Of
Who A Satan Is, In comparison With Esu ,Why The Two are not The same.
The Hebrew word satan means "an adversary, one who resists." In mainstream Christianity, the Devil (or Satan) is a fallen angel who rebelled against God. Satan was expelled from Heaven and sent to Earth. The devil is often identified as the serpent in the Garden of Eden, whose persuasions led to the two corresponding Christian doctrines: the Original Sin and its cure, the Redemption of Jesus Christ. He is also identified as the accuser of Job. According to Christian scripture, what caused Satan to be cast from Heaven? He fell because of pride that originated from his desire to be God instead of a servant of God. Satan was the highest of all the angels, but he wasn’t happy. He desired to be God and rule the universe. God cast Satan out of heaven as a fallen angel.
Observing the description above closely, it did not in any way correlate with Esu odara, who is a part of Irunmole,Olodumare (God) did not send Esu in Yoruba cosmology away from heaven, according to Ifa scripture’s in Ifa cosmology is an intermediary between Orunmila and Olodumare, Esu is Errant messenger for Orunmila and Orunmila normal reward him with ebo(sacrifice).Esu in Yoruba Cosmology have not in any Ifa scripture try to compete with Olodumare (God) with the way the Christian tradition has give their own account of their own Satan they trying to terms as Esu.The time is coming in future that African will realize how much damage Colonialism has done to our mentality. Esu is not the same thing as Biblical satan of Jewish or Christian tradition.
Muslim Description And Historical Account Of Who A Shayṭān is, In comparison With Esu ,Why The Two are not The same
In Islam, the devil is called Shayṭān (Arabic: شيطان, plural: شياطين shayāṭīn) and refers to all evil forces under leadership of the arch devil known as Iblīs (or Eblis), who was cast out of heaven after he refused to prostrate before Adam.
The primary characteristic of Iblis is hubris; not only did he deem himself a superior creation to Adam, he also demonstrated arrogance by challenging God's judgment in commanding him to prostrate. His primary activity is to incite humans and jinn to commit evil through deception, which is referred to as "whispering into the hearts. “The Quran mentions that devils are the assistants of those who disbelieve and commit immorality.
Satan in Islam is not the same Satan in the bible. The Satan of Islam was a "Jinn", created from fire as all Jinns were and still are. Angels were and still are created from light. While Angels and Jinns are considered "Angels" in Islam, because they were created from the same material (fire is light, and light is fire), but Jinns are lower than the Angels, because Jinns are like humans; they do sin, while the Angels are perfect and Sinless.
I will not go into controversy of while the Biblical Jewish account and description of who a Satan is, is slightly different from that of Islam or Quranic account. It is not the purpose of this work. The purpose of this work is to clear the misconception of regarding Esu as a Satan. From the Islamic description of Satan above, you will see that Shayṭān is clearly different from Esu.Esu in Yoruba tradition is never an Arch angel. And he is not made from fire according to Quranic or Islamic account of who a Shayṭān is. Esu mother is Adin, His home town is ketu, but he choose Ijelu Ekiti as his permanent last home, the two town mention still exist today in western part of present Nigeria for those who care to visit and find out. The description by Quran and Islam of Satan as all evil forces under leadership of the arch devil known as Iblīs (or Eblis, fall in the category of what is known as Ajogun(Malevolence forces) In Yoruba tradition,Olodumare cast away Ajogun(Malevolence forces away from heaven) and they are negative entities, and every one do make sacrifice to overcome them,Esu is even one of the messenger that is normally use to overcome all these Ajogun, through Ifa divination. In Yoruba cosmology is not Esu is not the same thing as
Shayṭān
Esu Description In Ifa cosmology and Spirituality.
Esu is the right-hand divinity of Orunmila. He run errands for him and see to the completion of orunmila desire. He takes ebo(sacrifice as his own dividends. Esu is the bearer of sacrifice to orun (the spirit world).he is the enforcer of Olodumare will to the divinities and man. He report to Olodumare GOD on timely bases on the deeds of human being and other divinities. It is the babalawo that understand Esu well through divination reading.as an enforcer of the will of Olodumare Esu do bring good or bad things to people depending on the frequency they maintain with GOD( Olodumare) this I may say account for the reason why people who have shallow spiritual knowledge of this deity misconstrued him as devil or Lucifer of other religion tradition that is absolutely different from our what is obtainable in Yoruba Ifa spirituality.
Odu Ifa made it clear that the earlier home of Esu is Ketu. Esu symbol can be carved in wood, clay, a piece of rock, laterite, will also do.
As I said earlier Esu is orisa of cross road (orita) orita is a T junction where one chooses which route one will take when road is divided to three or more. Esu as divinity of cross road symbolize the point of making decision or choices. So the original seat of Esu is not the orita (cross road as many people mistakenly think) but the original seat of Esu is in the heart of human being where decision whether good or bad is been made.
DIFFERENTS
TYPE OF ESU AND HOW YOU CAN CONSECRATE AND USE THEM.
Since we have known
that Esu is a messenger that bear the Ebo and spiritual message of people to t
Orun. It is therefore important that an Awo must know different type of Esu and
how to consecrate them for usage. The focus of Babalawo Obanifa in this aspect
is to document practical method that Babalawo can adopt to set up different Esu
shrine /element and their usage. There are different type of Esu and each have specific
function they perform. Below are the list of different type of Esu and how
Babalawo can prepare them.
1.Esu Agbebo -s Esu that accept the Ebo( sacrifice).
2. Esu Apede – Esu
that can be sent out to bring people for consultations.
3. Esu Awure -Esu
that bring lucks and prosperity
4. Esu Elegbara – Elegbara
mean the powerful ,This is Esu made with
clay that to open paths and prosperity.
5. Esu Aje /Esu
Alaje -This is Esu for creation of wealth which is made of wood with cowries around
its neck
6. Esu Ogo/Esu
Onigi- This is Esu made for health and
wealth It is made of wood and with many
beads on its neck
7. Esu Ija- This
Esu element which is good for fighting
It is instructive
that most Babalawo work with just one out of this Seven Esu . The one that most
Babalawo work with is Esu Agbebo. Esu Agbebo. But a babalawo that work with
many clients with different need can work with all the seven Esu. He can even
prepare some of it and give it to clients as protection or to enhance financial
abundance.
HOW TO CONSECRATE
ALL THESE ESU MENTIONED EARLIER
ESU AGBEBO ( ESU
THAT ACCEPT EBO)
This is the Esu
that accept Ebo that Babalawo usually have at in the front of their house or some time at
the back yard or in separate shrine meant such purpose. This where Ebo is
place . If it is Esu that take the ebo.
There are various method that can be sue to consecrate the Esu agbebo . Apart
from my personal knowledge ,I research across Yoruba Land to gather practical
knowledge from different practicing diviners on how they consecrate Esu In their
own domain.
Method 1
To consecrate Esu Yangi,
you will need the following:

ESU APEDE
Esu Apede is an
Esu element that can be used to draw people for consultation.
There are different
method of consecrating Esu Apede . They are:

I am calling the
name of the four
You ask me
why am I calling you ?
I answer that I
have no money, that's why I am calling you.
You ask me: what
can I hold in my hands that makes me ask for money?
I answer that I
hold the leaves of Odundun in my hands
You say that the leaves
of Odundun will make the rich come to me
with their money
I answer that I
bear the leaves of tete
You tell me that
the leaves of tete
They will make the
rich give me their money.
I answer that I hold
the rinrin leaves.
You say that the
strength of the Rinrin leaves makes it survive on earth easily.
You say that the Epo
will make people sponsor me with a lot of money.
If cock crow he
will show way to the lost
Iyerosun do not
allow my luck to sleep
Eji Ogbe go bring me the wealth
After praying the
powder is sprinkled over Esu and palm oil is poured on it. After praying,
the yangi stone is covered halfway and Iyerosun is placed on the board and the
sign is marked to pray again. After praying, the dust is sprinkled over
the place where Esu is, and palm oil is added. Observation: This Eşù
works with Agberu who is Esù's wife. When Ifa says that the ebo must be
brought to Agberu, he stands next to Esu. He also works with Woroko who
is Esu mother. When Ifá says that the ebọ should be brought to Woroko, he
stands behind Esu.
